Hi Mary Kate! You're work is such an inspiration to me. I would love to get your opinion on your favorite inking pens. Micron is the best I've found so far, but they dry out sooo fast. Any good suggestions? Thank you!

Hello! Thank you very much! I actually prefer uniball pens over microns. I also really like using pen and nibs time to time as well or the kawesko sport pens, they have more control. I have a variety of pens in my arsenal, but the fine point markers never satisfy. I think it’s the way the fine marker feels against paper. Hit up your local art store and experiment with a bunch of pens, that’s the best way to find out what works best for you.

I see you don't really do it and just wanted to know your thoughts on that - I was thinking of developing a little mini logo of sorts to use on mine coz I currently put on my blog address. Thanks so much! I’ve thought about putting watermarks on my images but I wouldn’t put it across the whole image because that never looks good. I would put a little website in the bottom of the image so that at least when it’s pinned, the proper credit is there. A little logo or website might also be a deterrent so if someone came across your illustration on pinterest, they know right away it isn’t just “up for grabs.” I have no idea how people have that mentality about art, but they do. However, it doesn’t always stop people from stealing, copying or just cropping it out and stealing it. So, who really knows. Either way, a tasteful little logo or website in the bottom could give you some piece of mind.

Thank you very much! I draw a lot of inspiration from vintage type that I come across in old type specimen books, antique tins and other vintage ephemera. But when I approach a new project I’m not always looking up new letter forms to reference, I research the project and let the content decide how the lettering will look. I do a bunch of sketches and experiment with different forms till I find the style that is unique to the idea. So it’s a combination of reference, research and plucking ideas out of my head.

Hello! I would definitely recommend Rives BFK. It is a bit pricey at about $4 for a 22” x 30” sheet and maybe better for a limited edition print but I’m always thrilled with the result over printing on something like French Paper. Happy Printing!
